Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
