Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned UK Technology to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Western Forces, Investigation Hears

A confidential source has told the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities left behind sensitive devices enabling Afghanistan's rulers to locate local individuals who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the information breach were told to change residences and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are investigating official handling of a serious leak of private information involving nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to move to the UK to escape the regime.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

An electronic document containing private information, comprising names, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was mistakenly released by an official employed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The breach was discovered in late 2023, when details of nine people who had sought to settle in Britain were posted on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is this misconception that militant forces lack the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed lawmakers.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain mobile details, they can trace you down to within metres. That is what intelligence groups accomplished.”

When questioned about if militant forces owned advanced decryption, the source declared: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Data Breach

Preliminary research submitted to the inquiry estimated that at least 49 family members and colleagues of Afghans affected by the breach had been killed.

A superinjunction about the leak was implemented in August 2023 and blocked relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the volunteer organization she collaborated with advised affected households they were working with that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.

“We advised that they relocate if they could and altered their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, if authorities obtained these details, would result in them being traced,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower contested that an official review performed by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not standing up to militant forces; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

She detailed horrific violence endured by concerned people, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to try to get relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
