As Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Widely-Shared Image Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, like many others in the area, heard loud noises reverberating around the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the hill still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was the only one moving in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He’s running at something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism During Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous moments of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and medical teams attending to many victims.

Community Reaction and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the site of the attack transforming into a makeshift medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, including entering the ocean to save people who were struggling.

Following the events, statements of support were shared. An online statement expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.

The squad of rescuers later shared a message, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our team,” the group commented. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the hope that it aids those involved.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the incident started right into late that night.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is incredible,” commented a council representative.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in keeping our iconic beaches safe for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the atrocity of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
