The acclaimed broadcaster and filmmaker, Sir Humphrey Burton, has passed away at 94 years old.

He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

His journey began in Wiltshire in 1931, culminating in a role as a pioneering broadcaster who shared classical music with the public.

His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the sixties and seventies was marked by critically praised work, including the programme The Golden Ring.

1978 saw him pioneer the Young Musician of the Year, a contest instrumental in identifying future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
