Experiencing Like Your Mind and Body Are Divided? Discover The Transformation When We Become Whole.

I recently came back from a run. It’s surprising to state those words. It seems it might have been a decade since my last. Yet I found out recently that my tests indicate somewhat raised cholesterol, and I’ve been advised to do sweaty exercise frequently.

This is the first time in my life that the driving force to be active has been my physical health. In my youth, I ran because I aimed to be thinner. I’ve also run to manage nervousness – I was merely escaping from those feelings, not addressing it. On other occasions, I ran because I aimed to improve with jogging. This was the meaning to me then to develop an improved existence.

Running for a different reason now got me thinking about the ways I’ve interacted with my physique over my lifetime and the way it’s evolving as I transition from youth to middle age. I believe not I’ve honored my body, not deep down. I’ve appreciated it just for its roles and the purposes it served me: trying to attract others; escaping emotions; running a faster 5km. Until today, I hadn’t realized that I am my body, it embodies my life, instead of something that produces results.

A lot has been written through history about the split between body and mind – which you will be relieved to know, I won’t summarize here. What has struck me most intriguing is the Freudian perspective that mental and physical selves are developmentally integrated right from the start, because physical development necessitates emotional evolution and vice versa. The infant’s physical sensations – such as the physical sensation of hunger – drive consciousness to develop the capacity to identify hunger as a feeling that can be sated by nourishment; and the emotional comfort and satisfaction repeatedly brought by meal after meal feeds the child’s mind just as the food fuels them physically. Similarly mental events – for instance the urge to stand up and reach for something, and the resolve to try again and again – are the reason and method physical strength increases. Starting at birth, mind and body are interconnected in shared growth as integrated as DNA strands.

But It’s become clear, in treatment with my analyst, that my consciousness and physique may exist in a different kind of relationship – a less unified and somewhat abusive. My consciousness can use my physical self to hold and manifest elements that my psyche deems unacceptable or intolerable. In my sessions we realized that exist specific feelings that I fear are too much for me; rather than experiencing them psychologically, I subconsciously force them to my physical self, where they get stuck as physical symptoms.

I previously experienced this as indigestion – unrelated to my diet, but was a form of bodily backlash of the sharper sentiments I was unable to process in my mind. It wasn’t an intentional act, but when it was brought to my attention in sessions, and my anxiety and insecurity and frustration and terror were experienced and expressed verbally in place of transformed into bodily feelings, it disappeared. It’s uncommon for me from indigestion today.

The most severe episode I had this intense reflux, I was unable to sleep for several nights in a row. I believed I was forfeiting my mental stability. I consulted my doctor, who arranged all sorts of scans and tests, but everything was physically wrong. It turned out to be an alternate medic who suggested that the origin might be emotional. My analyst did not disagree. I was shocked, but I recognized it was accurate.

If an individual experiences a bodily issue, they can be offended if told that it could have a psychological cause. They might feel this as being disrespected, being told that their condition is fabricated. Naturally such cases occur – some face their pain dismissed or wrongly assessed. But in some cases it’s possible that the bodily signs are genuine – no question – and the origin is psychological, the inner mind utilizing the physical self to manifest emotional hurt or rage or whichever sentiment the mind is unable to bear. At times, we may believe our experience matters solely if manifested as bodily symptoms. We often undervalue our psychological well-being on a personal level, as a society and culturally; how else would we tolerate the appalling elimination of psychodynamic psychotherapy on the NHS?

Personal insights have revealed that a better life cannot be created if we remain trapped unconsciously in patterns of interaction, inside us and with others, that are rooted in disregard, manipulation and transaction. These dynamics tend to be simpler to identify “externally” in broader culture. It may be harder to reflect on where they come from, and to recognise these shapes within ourselves and within our closest relationships, in the dynamics of our psyches.

However it’s worth persevering. When I put my trainers back on following many years, venturing out without aiming for bodily change, or to eliminate a sensation, or to surpass a running record, {it
