Tehran reports attacking a US naval base in Manama, as Iran launched strikes throughout the Middle East in retaliation for a "massive" and continuing attack against it by the US and Israel.
Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an vicinity near the command center of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The extent of any impact is uncertain and the United States has not commented.
Elsewhere across the region, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait - all home to American military installations - said they have shot down missiles in their territorial skies.
In the Qatari capital, the Qatari Ministry of Defence announced it had intercepted a number of projectiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the region.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement it was striking American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the attack on Iran initiated by the US and Israel on Saturday.
That US-Israeli operation - initiated at approximately 09:15 Iran time - has so far focused on sites associated with the the regime, with US President Donald Trump urging the Iranian people to rise up against the government.
In Israel, sirens were heard across the country after the Israeli military said it had detected an barrage of missiles from Iran.
The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates stated that the country has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"UAE air defence systems responded to the missiles with great effectiveness and shot down a several projectiles," it added.
Officials reported wreckage landed in a residential area in Abu Dhabi, causing some property damage and fatalities.
The US Air Force operates from Al Dhafra Air Base, south of the Emirati capital, along with the Emirati Air Force.
