Leonard and Hungry Paul Overview: A Soothing Series With Narration from the Famous Actress Offers the Perfect Cure to Today's World

In a calm area of Dublin, a person is standing on the pavement, dressed in a sleeveless jumper and expressing his feelings. “It seems like myself getting quieter. More invisible,” states Leonard, gazing up at the night sky. “Circumstances have evolved and at this point I feel like if I don’t do something, I’ll just carry on in this minor, harmless existence.” His friend Paul, Leonard’s best and only friend, reflects on the idea. “That's perfectly fine,” he replies, his dressing gown flapping gently. “Superior to striving for recognition only to wind up defacing it.”

For those tired by the noise and fast pace of current streaming offerings, the show steps in as a cozy wrap and a comforting beverage of a sweet cordial.

Similar to its quiet characters, the series – a half-dozen installment comedy developed by the writing duo, based on the novelist’s subtle 2019 novel – looks disapprovingly on contemporary society; peering critically above its spectacles on everything that involves loud sounds, abrupt changes or – perish the thought – too much drive. This show is, instead, a celebration of shyness; a gentle tribute for those content to pootle around away from attention. But. Leonard (a further uniquely quirky portrayal from Alex Lawther) is unsettled. He feels a growing “urge to throw open the doors and windows in my existence … a little.” The recent death of his parent has whisked the rug away from his feet and this young man, a writer for others, now finds himself questioning the choices which led him to this point (single; with a protective mustache; creating multiple children’s encyclopedias for a boss who ends messages saying “goodbye for now”).

And so Leonard starts on a journey for personal satisfaction, accompanied by the somewhat braver Paul (the actor) functioning as his confidante, mentor and ally in a recurring game night that serves both as debate (“Is the pool warm due to children urinating, or do kids pee in it since it's warm?”) and safe space.

(What's the origin of "Hungry" Paul? No idea. The origin of the nickname is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps Paul once ate a sandwich unusually quickly, or reacted to a tense moment by nervously peeling four scotch eggs by biting into them).

Entering Leonard's quiet life cartwheels a vibrant character (the actress), a recent lively co-worker who happily suggests to kill Leonard’s appalling boss (the actor) during the office fire drill. That whooshing sound noticeable represents Leonard's calm life experiencing a revolution.

In other scenes during the opening installment of a series driven less by plot and more by what younger viewers could describe as “atmosphere”, we are introduced to Paul's father (the brilliant the performer), a worn-out individual who covertly observes, saves and reviews daytime quiz shows to dazzle his devoted partner using his trivia skills.

Leading the audience throughout this subtle warmth we hear a narrator that is unmistakably – and actually is – Julia Roberts. Truly, the star. If you are thinking, “undoubtedly the presence of such a famous actor clashes with the show's modest approach and initially serves only as a diversion?” you would be correct. Nevertheless, Roberts acquits herself well, and dialogue like “The issue with Leonard is the missing a look of sudden insight” contribute to ensuring that initial doubts yield if not quite to appreciation, then certainly understanding.

Enough complaining for now. The series' spirit has good intentions: which is “located on a seat in the company of gentle comedies, indicating its preferred bird.” This is a show that moves gently in its sleeveless jumper, sometimes gazing upward at the stars, sometimes downward at its feet, serenely certain that there is nothing on Earth as cheering as being with dear pals.

Open the doors and windows in your existence, a little, and let it in.
