The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
