New Year's Revelers Advised to Bundle Up with Snow Forecast Across the UK

Forecasters are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Proceed Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be low, so warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Advisories Issued

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather could to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
