Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
