NY Unveils Portal for Public to Report Immigration Footage After Detentions of Four US Citizens

New York state attorney general has introduced a recent online portal asking residents to share visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This move comes just a day after a major enforcement action disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking widespread protests.

American Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action

A lawmaker disclosed during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and held for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Rallies occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG stated in a statement.

"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity recently, I urge you to submit that material with my office. We are pledged to assessing these submissions and investigating any wrongdoings."

Form Details

The portal includes fields to upload photos and videos of the operation, plus a area to indicate location information. When submitting, individuals must mark a checkbox that confirms that "the office may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or public report."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The Manhattan operation, which observers say featured dozens of federal agents, occurred in a popular area of NYC where counterfeit products and other goods are regularly available en masse – often to sightseers.

Videos of Tuesday's raid show multiple hooded and equipped officers restraining and arresting a man, and shoving away witnesses. Throngs of New Yorkers trailed the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was also seen traveling down the city streets.

Political Response

At a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four nationals were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He noted the citizens were released on the following day with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he said. "This represents a armed campaign to create conflict. It is merely a excuse to generate turmoil for the government to bring in the military to stop violence that they initiated."

Broad Criticism

Fury over the federal action quickly spread – every mayoral candidates denounced the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Yet again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It has to end," one mayoral candidate declared.

NYC advocacy organizations spoke out as well.

"Immigration agents descended on Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to community security and focused completely on frightening communities and neighborhoods," said the leader of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the agency has said it will not take into custody American nationals. However, independent reporting has found that numerous American nationals have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the present government.

Ongoing Trend

Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in New York and around the country lately.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Rallies against federal operations are ubiquitous as are allegations of aggression and cruel conditions.

Most recently, a document provided by legal entities alleged inadequate care of women with child in government custody.
