Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
