Among every adult-oriented cartoon movies I have personally watched, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the dread-soaked ending of a viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker created a grim, melancholy and often savage world with several minor , desolate twinges of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from a drive to expand the medium even more, the filmmaker explained that it was actually a try to convey a widespread, multicultural theme about “the shared root of every conflict.”
That idea is conveyed through a squad of colorful pastel bears , clearly inspired by a popular line of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a community built around militarism and the defense industry, a lot of these creatures are consumed by exterminating the mythical beasts, thanks to a religious scripture that claims them they were once kings of the woodland, before the horned beings drove them out.
A few haven’t fully accepted the indoctrination, and choose to experiment with drugs and fornicate in the woods.
Unlike their gentle counterparts, these bright beings display genitals , definite sex drives.
For a certain particularly cruel, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the battle against the unicorns becomes a route toward dominance — and especially to authority above his more tender, kinder brother the character Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , an apparent psychopath , and as horror overcomes his unit and takes his fellow soldiers one by one, he takes progressively power for himself, via progressively violent, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are suffering their own horror, in the form of an expanding, deadly beast in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it appears as a humorous movie,” the filmmaker commented. “Yet it evolves into a more serious and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it becomes a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the more playful movies by a renowned filmmaker, that discover a naughty glee in permitting animated figures curse, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Then it becomes closer to a bleaker work from the same director, including ever more visual gore , a tangible relation to genuine horror of war.
By the end, it’s a complete Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The terror which makes this an ideal spooky-season viewing kicks in much sooner than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore fans of gore, for fans of graphic films who desire to see something they have not viewed until now, and are able to withstand a story that offers no restraint.
See it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the conclusion will dig into your mind and stay with you.
