The co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he will independently develop this new product as part of a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
This latest development escalates the continuing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its colors, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which was first established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy was undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
