New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, was not quick to announce this decision right away after his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change there, the community will forever remain inside me and my work," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
