Triple National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee while the Nuggets fell 147-123 to the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt late in the first half in an accidental collision with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of the big man, who immediately collapsed to the ground holding his knee.

The 30-year-old, who tops the league season in boards and assists, had 21 points and eight assists in the contest before sustaining the injury.

The player will undergo an scan on the following day to determine the severity of the issue.

"Immediately, he realized he was hurt," stated Denver coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Any player that gets hurt, that's gut-wrenching, particularly a player as talented as he is. More information will come tomorrow."

"The team will adjust as a team. Clearly, currently, I'm more concerned just about Jokic personally and the letdown of facing an event of that nature."
