The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Mission

Just days before, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had transported a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the island.

That boat, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought solar panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded attempts to bring critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the country began.

International organizations have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba because of power shortages.

The naval forces said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to locate the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.
