The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate church.
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
